Targhee Creek Trail
(Level 2)

This one is going to be just a half review; I tried to go up it in early July when the streams are ridiculously high, so my wife and I got stuck about 3 miles in. However, Trails.com’s review only goes 2.5 miles in, so I guess I beat them there. It’s a fun day hike if you’re going to the bridge and back, which is what Trails.com does, however, if you’re in the mood for a get away for a week end, Clark Lake is 4 miles further down the trail, and was my original destination, before getting stuck in a swollen creek.

The trail-head can be found by following  highway 20 north towards West Yellowstone. The turnoff is hard to catch, but is about 60 miles north of Rexburg. Watch for the Targhee Creek Trailhead sign and it will take you on a dirt road for a couple minutes. The trail head is off to the right of the road and there should be a sign marking the start of the trail.

It’s a fun trail, but it’s right in the middle of bear country, so review our bear safety video and take bear spray along. The trail isn’t very difficult at all and it meanders through woods meadows and crosses the creek at several points. Two peaks are on either side, Targhee peak on the south side and Bald peak on the north.

This can be a day hike if you go 2.5 miles in to a little foot bridge and then turn back, or a weekend fishing trip if you go all the way to the lake, so prepare accordingly.
